The Failure of the Environmental Movement

I’m tired of hearing about how “environmentalists are failing” in the wake of Adam Werbach’s provocative pronouncement that environmentalism is dead. We’re all failing, to one degree or another. But it’s the people who aren’t environmentalists, who aren’t making ethical decisions based on environmental conscious, who are failing most. It’s the politicians, the news directors, the TV network owners, the oil companies, the car companies. As one of the many environmentalists who have worked hard to raise consciousness about ecological problems, this whole line of reasoning about our failure just isn’t compelling. It’s just more sensationalist clap-trap that will end up doing little more than confusing “environmentally concerned” politicians who want to stay in-step with what big media is saying about the environmental movements.
